Ichabod Krane - Day Of Reckoning
Pure Steel Records, 2014
1. Dark Valentine
2. Hypnotized
3. Unwanted
4. Final Warning
5. Fallen Angel
6. Evil In You
7. Nothing Without You
8. Struggle Within
9. Immortal
10. Nostradamus
When I first heard about this new project featuring some veteran musicians from such American cult bands as Sleepy Hollow and Halloween I was immediately intrigued. With the skilled hands of George Neal, Tom Wassman, Rick Craig and the underrated vocal talents of Jeff Schlinz working together I figured the end result had to come out pretty good. After I got my early promo copy however, I realized that my expectations would not only be reached but nicely surpassed!
What we end up with is a very good throwback sounding piece of metal. I am not talking about something that sounds like they were trying to go back in time and clone the early to mid 80's sound such as has been happening a lot lately (and yes I do enjoy all the retro NWOTHM bands out there), but this CD comes from the 80's. It oozes and drips and bleeds from the era. I could envision Ichabod Krane sharing the stage with Helstar during the Burning Star era for example.
At the same time I can now envison Ichabod Krane sharing the stage with Sean Peck and Cage as well. Songs like Hypnotized, Fallen Angel, Final Warning, Evil In You and so on will not be full of glitzy sing along choruses or bombastic over the top effects, but they will kick you in the teeth with their razor sharp vocals and their straight up riffing and pounding drums. This is not a sexy album but a beast of METAL!
The production is not as elaborate as one would expect in 2014, but that adds even more to the authenticity of the music showcased here. You can tell they got together to write something they enjoy here and weren't trying to be trendsetters or to try to make a quick buck and cash in (really whoever tries to do that these days is living under a rock) and so the music is very genuine and "real".
Ichabod Krane is here and I am hooked. It is time for everyone to face the Day Of Reckoning!!!
