Metal Inquisitor - Ultima Ratio Regis
Massacre Records, 2014
1. Confession Saves Blood
2. Burn Them All
3. Call The Banners
4. Black Desert Demon
5. Bounded Surface
6. Death On Demand
7. Self-Denial
8. Servant Of State
9. The Pale Messengers
10. Second Peace Of Thorn
Germany's Metal Inquisitor is waiving the metal flag strongly as they release their fourth full length disc chock full of traditional metal anthems ala Saxon, Picture and the like.
As I am listening to this CD for the third time now I am trying to come up with some bands that this reminds me of, maybe Riot or Running Wild or something but it just really keeps sounding like Saxon to me if Biff was no longer on the mic. Definitely a child of the NWOBHM. NWOGHM? Hmmmm.
The production is not quite crystal clear though it does a fine job and for some reason I feel Metal Inquisitor needs to have a less shiny project to feel more authentic. The riffs are strong yet nothing too spectacular and the vocals are similarly quite satisfactory yet not mind blowing! This is definitely a meat and potatoes type of band, no extra frills or wasted bits, just plug in your axes and get the job done. Back to basics heavy metal, just the way it was meant to be.
Confession Saves Blood, Call The Banners, Black Desert Demon, Bounded Surface, Death On Demand, etc etc. There is a ton of really solid tracks to be found here, nothing that is instantly memorable and nothing that will get caught in your head for long periods of time with it's catchiness, but nothing that lets you down either.
A good listen and a good addition to your collection, just don't expect to be blown away either. I was hoping for something just a bit more however. Maybe next time!
