Out of Brooklyn comes this progressive outfit and their debut album. This four-piece has put together a pretty epic sounding concept album full of the usual suspects as far as progressive music is concerned. What I mean by that is a lot of lengthy epic length numbers, a lot of music oriented pieces with minimal vocals and a lot of big sounding production. Very glitzy and well done.
The vocals of Will Severin are majestic and lush and maybe at times a bit too radio friendly. They do fit the mold of the band very well and work well with the material. In fact I could see this band do big things on radio if they chose to go that route (hopefully they don't as the music here is quite good), though it could stand to be a bit on the crunchier side.
Personally I am not a giant fan of pure progressive metal. I prefer there to be a bit more of a power vibe to my prog. That is a personal preference however and I will not go on too much on it and just stick to the facts. How these guys haven't gotten more attention is beyond me as this is really good music. They do show enough teeth here to definitely stay on the metal radar (check out the heavy vibe of The Pact for example). They have moments of definite Queensryche/Dream Theater vibeness in their delivery, which is definitely high praise.
Betrayed and She are both very cool tunes despite the lack of crunchiness to them, showing a band can be metal whether or not they keep the heaviness going full tilt. Of course I am not a huge fan of the really epic length tracks here and will not say much about them (gotta leave something for the reader to discover on their own after all).
If you are a fan of epic sounding classic prog, then this CD is definitely worth checking out. If your brand of metal is more along the lines of heavy thrashy stuff, you may still want to check this out if you are open to trying new things! Great music is great music!
